Episode 02: Yuzu's Onigiri

The Synopsis

The next morning, Kippei wakes up surprised to find Yuzuyu in his bed. Then he remembers what had happened the other day, and smiles at the cute image of Yuzuyu's sleeping form.
Kippei freaks his mother out as he asks her to teach him how to make onigiri for Yuzuyu's lunch. His sister finds him at the rice pot, and teases him for being so nice to girls. Yuzuyu wakes up and is suddenly delighted when she sees Kippei making her lunch. As she brushes her teeth, she shares the sink with Satsuki. Yuzuyu asks Satsuki if Kippei has a girlfriend, and when he replies that he doesn't think so, Yuzuyu tell shim that in that case she will marry him. A bewildered Satsuki is told not to tell anyone, that it's a secret.
Yuzuyu gets a pink package for her lunch, and smiles in delight. As she and Kippei walk to school, she chants an "onigiri" song. Kippei tells her they have to hurry or they'll be late, and in response Yuzuyu sings faster.
Back in school, Kippei is shown eating lunch with his friends. When he sees Kokoro and his other fellow female classmates' lunches, he is shocked at how flashy they are. He asks if that makes them happy, and they tell him that a lunch without sides is the worst thing in the world to have. Kippei suddenly feels very bad about the single, monstrous onigiri he gave Yuzuyu for her lunch, and spends the rest of the day moping about it at the stairwell.
A girl finds him and begins to "play." Kippei and the girl are then interrupted by Kokoro, who was sent to tell Kippei that Sensei was looking for him. Kippei goes after Kokoro to ask which Sensei, and is rebuffed when he touches her shoulder. Kokoro tells him that she isn't like other girls, so to keep his hands off.
Kippei goes to pick Yuzuyu up, and learns that Yuzuyu had hit her classmate. Yuzuyu's friend had laughed at her onigiri, and she had hit him earlier that day, though the teacher doesn't know that this was the reason behind Yuzuyu's actions. Yuzuyu avoids holding Kippei's hand as they make their way home. When Kippei picks Yuzuyu up after she trips at the crosswalk, Yuzuyu begins to cry that her friend had laughed at her onigiri. Kippei comforts her and asks if it was really that bad, and Yuzuyu shakes her head. Kippei promises to do better tomorrow, and Yuzuyu is happy again.

The Review

I really like how the artists and story directors went in-depth with the whole lunch business, since from my own experience I can say that lunchtime has always been the highlight of my schooldays. If my lunch was bad, my day was bad.
