However, there is confusion over who is trying to do what. It is discovered that the new course of Junius 7 is not a natural event - it is being moved by angry veterans from Jacchin Due. The Girty Lue thinks that the Minerva is trying to help these veterans, and the Minerva thinks the same of the Girty Lue. This confusion is eventually resolved as the Minerva sends out a signal to the Girty Lue, informing them of their intentions. The Girty Lue then withdraws its three Earth Alliance pilots and sits back to watch. Cagalli wakes up and returns to the bridge to learn that Athrun has left in a mobile suit to help out.
Shinn, Athrun, Lunamaria, and Rey battle against the veterans who refuse to let them shatter Junius 7. Athrun meets Yzak, who has brought his own forces to the crisis.
Earth begins to panic, since there is no way they can evacuate everyone. Kira and Lacus also get word back in Orb. Jibril decides to turn this situation to his advantage.
As Athrun and Shinn place drills to do the shattering of Junius 7, Athrun is confronted with a particularly angry veteran, who screams that Patrick Zala (Athrun's late father) had been right all along - and that all the pain and suffering after the Earth nukes had killed his daughter in the Bloody Valentine could not be forgotten. Shinn hears these painful words spoken to Athrun.
The splitting of Junius 7 is a success, but they don't make it in time for it to pass Earth. They have to shatter all of it. The Minerva is unable to locate Shinn or Athrun in all the debris, and fires its cannons at the pieces of Junius 7 blindly in a last effort to save Earth. Shinn and Athrun continue to destroy more pieces until the last moment, and they both enter Earth's atmosphere. The heat of entering causes trouble for Athrun's already-damaged unit. Kira stands at the shores of Orb and watches as firey meteors fall from the sky.

The Review

Surprise! Athrun decides to pilot again, and for his efforts, he feels the pain of being his father's son. Yzak becoming a commander wasn't too much of a surprise - he was always ambitious. I had to laugh when he ordered Athrun to shut up, he was commander now, and as such he did not have to take orders from a civilian!
