The Review

Overall Impression

This was what I started with when I first found out about the Rurouni Kenshin anime series. I enjoyed this from the beginning, but it begins to run on and on...95 episodes! But I have to admit that the story is very good. Watsuki weaves together ancient Japanese history, traditions, and culture with modernized ideas, and especially technology and culture. The art is pretty good--not the best I've seen but B+ range when compared to others. It has a lot to do with moral values and defining a "right to kill"--there is a big emphasis on the Today Vs. Yesterday conflict and adds a bit of irony to that. If you've ever seen the movie The Last Samurai and liked it, you will probably like Rurouni Kenshin :).

The Artwork

Nicely done. The hands are very good - the usual key to differentiating the skilled from the unskilled is through the quality of drawings of hands..or so my mentor taught me ^_^.

Breaking It Down
The Good Points
  • Deep history that actually includes some real references
  • The conflicts also get deep
  • Nice mix of the known martial arts and science fiction
The Bad Points
  • It's a neverending story
  • Sometimes gets a little too idealistic and preachy
  • Many parts of past episodes are repeated later on
