In this series, we learn a lot about Kenshin's past. It fills in a lot of the gaps eluded to in the Anime Series Rurouni Kenshin, which documents Kenshin's life after the war. Here, Kenshin is a young man who dives into the chaotic world of politics, and, according to his teacher, allows himself to become a tool for greedy and revolutionary political leaders. He is an advanced student, but not yet a master since he left his master before his training was complete, who makes a legend of himself using the Hiten Mitsurugi style of fighting. At first he is simply known as "Kenshin," but later he becomes "the Battousai" - which literally tranlsates to "the Manslayer."

Tomoe is a mysterious character - even more so than Kenshin. It turns out that she is the "betrayer" in Trust&Betrayal. Originally, Kenshin killed her fiance during one of his assassination assignments. Kenshin didn't know the guy was her fiance until much, much later in Betrayal. Kenshin and Tomoe meet by accident, and Kenshin takes her in since she was drunk at the time. Eventually they fall in love. It turns out that Tomoe is a part of an organization that wants the Battousai destroyed.
